“June 2014 – Water; And What the River Brings Us.”

Acrylic on Canvas, 36” x 24”

This piece was sold before I even started it. In fact I was well into a different painting when the opportunity came up to contribute to a silent auction as part of the Willow Park Charity Golf Classic in support of Calgary Meals on Wheels.

It was a unique challenge for me to have less than a month to start and finish this painting…especially since my “seasonal inspiration” had already gone into the other piece I had started. As well, this new one was going to be on a smaller canvas, which is a whole other challenge (it is so much easier to go up in size than down).

But things came together very well…very quickly. I had to reconsider my approach a bit as I began this painting. I actually found being more aimless at the start allowed for less revision later on…less struggle to pin down the essential structure and move forward into the finishing stages.

It is of course a painting of spring and GREEN; and the unbelievable transformation that we experience year after year…the lushness of everything…the wet, the new, the fresh. The life from death. Of a beautiful river that awakens into force and danger.

The water bring us new life. The water brings us destruction. The waters brings us hope and change.

Also: A HUGE shout out and thank you to Karen Anderson for bringing me this opportunity and being such a big supporter of my work. She runs these amazing food tours in Calgary and is always busy writing something about food and life. You can also sometimes hear her on CBC Radio One’s Alberta at Noon.

“April 2014 – Trumpets and Mountains.”

Acrylic on Canvas, 30” x 40”

Waves of landscape. Notes of triumph and winter’s end.

In other news…I revisited this piece here:

Which is now this:

And I am donating it to the Artemis Foundation for their Gallery Calorie 2014 fundraising event which features an “art race”. Check out the details here. All proceeds this year are going to www.familiesmatter.ca.

“October 2013 – Dizzy Autumn.”

Acrylic on Canvas, 36” x 24”

Everything pops and vibrates. Colours push and pull. Lines shake and remain still. After-image effects and star bursts…..eyes closed or open. Light in the dark; faintly pressing and spreading out. Sparks and static and little motes of visible, invisible electricity. Too bright and nearly tactile…this is the world that I see and this is how I see it. Always too much but never enough.

Bonus: A wonderfully generous write-up by my friend Karen Anderson.

And a note: I found out awhile ago that this painting, selected for the 2012 Timeraiser, was damaged and lost during the flood this summer (all the pieces chosen that year were in storage downtown until the auction winners completed their pledges).

Rest in peace old friend! 🙁

“Summer 2013 – Flood; Consume.”

Acrylic on Canvas, 36” x 24”

Remember the Flood?

June. This painting started with a pleasant, meandering river flowing beside a line of trees…a week or two later we were drowning under a seething, roiling mass of angry brown water; and there was no way this painting wasn’t going to be affected by such an incredible sight.

And here’s what you don’t see when viewing the canvases online...

“May 2013 – On the Verge…”

Acrylic on Canvas, 36” x 24”

This painting has been all but finished for awhile..and then finished for awhile longer yet. So it belongs more to early-mid spring and May than the beginning of summer. And it is decidedly flood free…
